Getting ( a Rocky Mountain ) High with Friends.

Wow. I just looked at my last blog post and it was November 8, 2011. My blog is so good it is tri-annual. Ha! Nope. Thats a lie. Im really bad at starting something and not finishing it...but heres to change!

The Navarro Family
I have quite a bit to catch up on...but rather bore people with that, Im just going to hit the highlights and bore you with those....one of which was our road trip to colorado this summer with some of our best friends...Nate and Melissa Navarro. Good times had by all. They are moving to Temple, Texas in a few months. (insert sad face, tears, convulsions and shaking) Truly , truly I am so proud, excited, anxious and eager to see what is in store for this family.  They are a good one. Listening to God's call in their lives and actually following through...what???!!! I feel like my calls from God are usually either muted or there is a terrible connection...the Navarro's are legit, great reception.  Alas, I think if we can drive 18 hours in a two cars with a teenager , two 6 yr olds, one 5 yr old, one 3 yr old , one 9 month old baby and a dog, we can manage 50 minute temple/austin commute (so they say) to see each other.

Night out in Sante Fe at Tomasita's

Lake City, Colorado was the destination...a small fly fishing community nestled in the mountains...away from anything inexpensive, say gas or a gallon of milk...but gorgeous none the less. My husband grew up going there as a child with his family and has continued that tradition with ours...and hopefully we have passed it on to one more family to continue in theirs. There truly is nothing more peaceful than beautiful mountains and streams to wake up to in the mornings...and it helps that the thermometer reads 45 degrees vs 102.  Our road trip consisted of a night in Lubbock at a very swanky hotel...oops, spell check, i meant skanky. We then proceeded to Sante Fe which was wonderful.  Great dinner in town at a local restaurant, margaritas, laughing, toasting, high fives...then 6:00 pm hit. The walls came crashing down and the kids had to go to bed...night night. Breakfast was at the French Pastry Shoppe. This is truly where "vacation Haydn" was coined.  Vacation Haydn is a man who doesn't wear a watch, asks, "what's a smart phone?..I don't want one!", and orders crepe after pastry after frog shaped french bread after another pastry to go.  Vacation Haydn, vacation haydn...you could hear it chanted through the town square if you were listening closely and had your phone on vibrate. ok ok, Sante Fe was great...enough of that.

The French Pastry Shop , Jet carb loading and the birth of Vacation Haydn

Lake City, Colorado. Boom. We are there...well, really not boom. After 9 hours from New Mexico we are there...Nate had to stop to go to the bathroom like every 10 minutes.  We check into Vicker's Dude ranch...get our cabins...The Navarro's cabin is nestled in the trees and facing the stream with no road or power lines in site. Our cabin...well...it was in walking distance to theirs!

My morning coffee...not bad, not bad at all.

Facebooking about how beautiful it is....so good to get away.

Soooo fast forward or rewind from that day on...we get up, drink coffee, watch kids play, facebook about how gorgeous it is and how much fun we are having, Haydn fishes, we see some family that is there, Nate goes to Packers, instagram the beautiful pictures we took that morning, Nate grills, we eat their food, Betsy throws rocks at peoples heads, Kai leaves Jet out, check facebook to see who liked our pictures,Ava sings "call me maybe" 10 times in a row, mary jones is perfect, our dog sweetie pie poops in the Navarro's cabin, Nate steps in it , he blames it on Ava, Melissa showers and puts on make-up, I don't, Jess puts on one of her 11 different pairs of TOMS with something cute that i think to myself i want to copy then remember she is 13 and I am 37, everyone younger than 8 goes to bed. We stay up and talk over wine. The best. Go to Durango, see Andy Braner at Camp Kivu, convince Jess that is really is a cool place to go, celebrate Kai's 7th birthday.... then we drive home. Not the best. All good things must come to an end...at least for 18 hours.

All friendships need a good trip...it takes you to the next level. A level you love or hate. Thankfully, we love it. We will do it again, but this time Nate may fly.

friends

I love this quote:
" Each friend represents a world in us, a world not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born," - Anais Nin

I love all my friends and the friendships that are continuing to develop...they truly do birth a new life of experiences, growth, compassion and understanding.  I am so grateful for that.  These particular friends are just on my heart right now because of their upcoming move...

Homeskool: whi wii r dewing itt,

I have been asked by many friends , family and strangers why we have lost our minds...I mean why we are homeschooling.  Im going to try and answer it the best I know how to...which might not be very articulate, thought provoking or interesting at all. Feel free at any moment to go back to your US Weekly....( I know, so sad about Zooey and Ben) .

First and foremost we want to do what is best for OUR kids...hence OUR. I didn't say yours. =) Isn't it fun being a parent? We get to choose what is best for OUR kids, not everyone else's...though some of us have blurred the lines a bit on this one. =) As I attempt this explanation/conviction know fully I am in no way shape or form anti public school or private. Teachers are my friend. God Bless all who pour their lives into children and do it with Joy! The children are our future you know...=)  As I share our vision it isn't saying these cant be done other ways....believe me, if i have said it once to my "maticulous" husband , I have said it 1,000 times....there is more than one way to do something, skin the cat...however you want to put it...options! thank goodness.

hmmmm. where to start:
We didnt love our public school in our neighborhood. We werent in a financial position this year to send Kai back to the private school she was at last year which we LOVED! and....we wanted to. For real. I fought it for awhile. no way. I dont do that. Thats not me. I will dumb her way down, way down. I cant read, how will she? jk. I will crap her up eternally, forever and ever....irreversible brain damage to her ....i will lose my mind, we cant spend all day together, i need a break. yup. all that. still go through it too. Im no saint. but it kept coming back and kept coming back....sneaky thing, that homeschooling. Too long for a blog entry but we came full circle about three times on it and finally decided to just do it....and here, finally, is why:

First and foremost when Im honest, really really honest: we want our kids to be kids longer. we dont want to put them in a "flock" to follow and do as society tells us. we want a looser schedule that allows us to go, do and learn as we please. ...we enjoy our children and desire to be with them...life is short and we want to make it interesting for them....school doesnt own learning...we sometimes feel it took 12 years of freedom by standards...it doesnt have to take our kids if we dont want it to...we want to provide a rich education full of art, literature and adventure....we want to bond as a family and develop deeper relationships with our children...it provides more opportunities to pass on morals, values, and beliefs that arent challenged by peers at a YOUNG age.  Believe us, we know the world and certainly dont think our kids wont be apart of it, we want them to be, full force, but we dont want them exposed to the ugliness of it at a time in their devleopement that they are not able to process and understand.  We want full steering of their influences, experiences, and knowledge at the ripe old age of 6. Meer babes. We definately want to promote and encourage an atmoshpere of creativity and adventure but coupled with a deep desire to grow into loving, kind and compassionate people....we believe ultimately our children are not ours...they are God's. Loved by Him. We want them to understand what that means and what it looks like in society, culture, world, etc...can all this be done a dozen different ways?? Of course it can!! do we think others are doing it wrong? no way. We are just doing what made sense for US and OURS. Will this last?? maybe, maybe not but it is right for right now....and that feels good. It is hard. Really hard some days. Other days we are filled with the joy our decision brings...these days make the others tolerable. =) Do we "do school" every day. Nope. We have been on "hiatus" the last 6 weeks due to travels and listing a home and just reconvened. We are not Congress, but we are in session as casual as it may be. We are just a family following an urge and conviction to try something different and off the beaten trail....though some days the beaten trail looks like Disney World and the choice to Homeschool  feels like The Trail of tears...we continue...at least for now. That is what we love...that we have options! Beautiful, creative, wonderful options for unique children we are so fortunate to call ours....arent we all doing the best we know how to do based on our own experiences and life circumstances? I choose this for now and support 100% those who dont....heck...we may choose something totally different next year...because we can...What a blessing to have the freedom to choose for our children. AMEN.

Below are some pictures from trips we have been able to take with the kids this Fall....a good example of embracing the loose schedule!! ( I'm super good at that...A + )
